Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large sweet potatoes (about 3 pounds or 1.4 kg)
  • 1/2 cup (113 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup (50 g) packed light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1/3 cup (80 ml) whole milk or heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (120 g) chopped pecans
  • 1/2 cup (100 g) packed light brown sugar (for streusel)
  • 1/3 cup (42 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup (56 g) cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for streusel)
  • Pinch of salt (for streusel)
  • 1/2 cup (60 g) mini marshmallows (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon bourbon or dark rum (optional)
  • Zest of 1 orange (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or foil. Wash and scrub sweet potatoes, prick with a fork, and roast for 45-60 minutes until soft.
  2. Let sweet potatoes cool for 10 minutes. Slice in half, scoop out flesh into a large bowl, and mash until smooth.
  3. Add softened butter, brown sugar, beaten eggs, milk or cream, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt to the mashed sweet potatoes. Stir until well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine chopped pecans, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt. Add cold butter cubes and cut in with a pastry cutter or two forks until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Reduce oven temperature to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Spread sweet potato mixture evenly in the dish. Sprinkle pecan streusel topping over the top.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes until streusel is golden brown and filling is bubbling. If using marshmallows, add during last 5 minutes. Let cool for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Roast sweet potatoes instead of boiling to concentrate flavor and avoid wateriness. Use cold butter for streusel to ensure crumbly texture. Let casserole rest after baking for cleaner serving. Toast pecans lightly for deeper flavor.
