A rich, velvety slow cooker hot chocolate that is easy to prepare and perfect for cozy winter mornings or gatherings. This recipe allows you to set it and forget it while enjoying a comforting, customizable drink.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 to 6 cups whole milk (or oat/almond/soy milk for dairy-free)
  • 1 cup heavy cream or half-and-half (optional for richness)
  • 1 to 1.5 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ to ¾ cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Ensure the slow cooker insert is clean and dry.
  2. Pour the milk and heavy cream into the slow cooker.
  3. Sprinkle in the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt. Whisk gently in the cold liquid to prevent clumps.
  4. Add the semi-sweet chocolate chips on top.
  5. Place the lid on and cook on LOW for 2 to 3 hours. Do not cook on HIGH.
  6. After 2 hours, stir with a whisk to check for unmelted chocolate. If needed, cook for another 30 minutes until smooth.
  7. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  8. Switch to WARM setting if serving immediately, or keep on LOW for up to 4 hours total to maintain warmth without thickening excessively.

Notes

Do not let the milk boil, as it can develop a skin and lose creaminess. Add vanilla extract at the end to preserve flavor. If the mixture is too thick, add a splash of milk; if too thin, cook uncovered for 30 minutes. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Do not freeze if it contains dairy.
