A comforting, spiced apple cinnamon sangria that balances bold red wine with crisp fruit and warm spices. This easy-to-make drink is perfect for Friendsgiving, requiring minimal prep time and allowing flavors to meld for a sophisticated, crowd-pleasing beverage.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 750ml bottle Red Wine (Cabernet Sauvignon or Pinot Noir)
  • 1/2 cup Brandy or Cognac
  • 1/4 cup Triple Sec or Orange Liqueur
  • 2 tablespoons Brown Sugar
  • 3 large Apples (mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp), chopped
  • 2 large Pears, chopped
  • 2 large Oranges, sliced (peel on)
  • 3 to 4 Cinnamon Sticks
  • 1/2 teaspoon Nutmeg, freshly grated
  • 2 pods Star Anise (optional)
  • 1 cup Sparkling Water or Club Soda
  • Ice Cubes (or frozen apple slices)

Instructions

  1. Wash all fruit thoroughly. Core the apples and pears, then chop them into bite-sized chunks. Slice the oranges into thin rounds.
  2. In a large pitcher, combine the red wine, brandy, and triple sec. Stir well to mix.
  3. Add the brown sugar and stir until mostly dissolved.
  4. Toss the chopped apples, pears, and orange slices into the liquid.
  5. Add the cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, and star anise pods. Stir gently to coat the fruit.
  6. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, to allow flavors to infuse.
  7. When ready to serve, add the sparkling water or club soda and stir gently.
  8. Taste and adjust sweetness if necessary. Pour over ice into glasses, ensuring each serving includes fruit.

Notes

For best results, use a wine you enjoy drinking on its own. The sangria improves with time, so making it the night before is recommended. Add sparkling water only right before serving to maintain carbonation. If the fruit becomes too mushy after several days, remove it before serving. For a non-alcoholic version, substitute the brandy and triple sec with additional orange or apple juice and use non-alcoholic wine or strong black tea.
