A warm, spiced holiday cocktail featuring a homemade butter blend of brown sugar and spices, creating a velvety, comforting drink perfect for winter evenings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp ground allspice
  • 1/4 tsp ground ginger
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper
  • 2 oz aged dark rum (per serving)
  • Hot water (per serving)
  • Optional garnishes: cinnamon stick, whipped cream, whole cloves

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine softened butter, dark brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, ginger, and cayenne pepper.
  2. Beat the mixture with an electric mixer or fork until smooth and creamy, forming a paste-like consistency.
  3. Store the butter blend in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
  4. Boil water and pour a small amount into serving mugs to warm them; discard water and dry mugs.
  5. For each serving, scoop one heaping tablespoon of the butter blend into the bottom of a warm mug.
  6. Pour 2 ounces of aged dark rum over the butter blend and stir gently.
  7. Fill the mug with hot water, leaving space at the top.
  8. Stir vigorously for 10-15 seconds until the butter is fully dissolved and the drink is creamy.
  9. Garnish with a cinnamon stick or whipped cream and serve immediately.

Notes

Ensure butter is softened to room temperature to prevent clumping. Use aged dark rum for best flavor; avoid white rum. Stir vigorously to emulsify the butter. For a non-alcoholic version, omit rum and use hot apple cider. The butter blend can be made ahead and frozen for up to three months.
