A spooky yet delicious Halloween appetizer featuring a smooth black bean base topped with a piped creamy cheese web. This easy, crowd-pleasing dip comes together in under 20 minutes and is perfect for parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 (15-ounce) cans black beans, rinsed and drained thoroughly
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 small can green olives, sliced (optional, for spider eyes)
  • Tortilla chips for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a round baking dish with olive oil.
  2. Sauté the diced onion in a skillet over medium heat with a tablespoon of oil until soft and translucent (about 3 minutes). Add minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. In a food processor, combine the rinsed black beans, sautéed onion and garlic, cumin, chili powder, salt, pepper, and lime juice. Pulse until smooth but with slight texture.
  4. Spread the bean mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish to form the spider’s body.
  5. In a separate bowl, mix the softened cream cheese, sour cream, and half of the shredded mozzarella until smooth and creamy.
  6. Transfer the cream cheese mixture into a piping bag (or a ziplock bag with a corner snipped off).
  7. Pipe a dot in the center of the bean mixture. Pipe straight lines radiating from the center to the edges to create a star pattern.
  8. Pipe small curves connecting the straight lines to create concentric web circles.
  9. Bake for 10-12 minutes until the topping is bubbly and the mozzarella is melted and slightly golden.
  10. Optional: Add green olive slices for spider eyes before serving.
  11. Let cool for 2-3 minutes and serve with sturdy tortilla chips.

Notes

Ensure black beans are thoroughly rinsed and dried to prevent a soupy texture. Cream cheese must be fully softened for smooth piping. Sautéing the onions adds sweetness and removes harshness. The dip is best served warm; refrigerated leftovers can be reheated in the microwave or oven.
