A smooth, mysterious, and creamy latte featuring activated charcoal for a striking black color and subtle earthiness, perfect for Halloween and cozy fall vibes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 shots (60 ml) espresso or strong brewed coffee
  • 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon food-grade activated charcoal powder
  • 1 cup (240 ml) milk (whole milk recommended, or oat/almond milk for dairy-free)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla syrup
  • Pinch of cinnamon
  • Sweetener to taste (optional: honey, maple syrup, or sugar)
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream (optional)

Instructions

  1. Brew 2 shots of espresso (about 60 ml) or strong coffee concentrate and set aside in a small mixing bowl.
  2. Stir in 1/4 teaspoon of activated charcoal powder into the hot coffee. Whisk briskly to dissolve clumps. Add up to 1/2 teaspoon for deeper color if desired.
  3. Heat 1 cup (240 ml) of milk until steaming but not boiling (about 140°F / 60°C). Froth milk using a milk frother or whisk vigorously by hand until creamy foam forms. If using heavy cream, whisk it in now.
  4. Stir 1 tablespoon vanilla syrup and a pinch of cinnamon into the frothed milk. Add sweetener if desired.
  5. Slowly pour the charcoal espresso into a latte glass, then gently ladle the frothed milk over it to create a layered effect.
  6. Garnish with a sprinkle of cinnamon or cocoa powder and serve immediately while warm.

Notes

Start with less activated charcoal to avoid bitterness and adjust to taste. Use whole milk for best froth and creaminess. Pour milk slowly over the back of a spoon for a layered velvet effect. Activated charcoal can stain surfaces; use dark bowls and clean spills promptly. Latte is best served fresh and warm. Leftovers can be refrigerated up to 24 hours and reheated gently.
