A rich, velvety hot chocolate made in a slow cooker with simple pantry staples. This easy 5-ingredient drink combines cocoa, milk, cream, and peppermint for a comforting, festive beverage perfect for winter.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (preferably dutched)
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp peppermint extract
  • 1 pinch salt
  • Whipped cream for topping
  • Crushed candy canes for garnish

Instructions

  1. Rinse the slow cooker insert and set the appliance to Low heat.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt to prevent lumps.
  3. Pour the whole milk and heavy cream into the slow cooker.
  4. Add the dry ingredient mixture to the liquids and whisk until well combined.
  5. Stir in the vanilla extract and peppermint extract, scraping the sides of the pot.
  6. Cover and cook on Low for 2 to 3 hours, stirring once or twice to ensure even heating.
  7. Check consistency after 2 hours; it should be warm and slightly thickened. Adjust with milk if too thick or cook longer if too thin.
  8. Ladle into mugs and top with whipped cream and crushed candy canes before serving.

Notes

For a dairy-free version, substitute whole milk and heavy cream with oat milk or coconut milk. To avoid scorching, always cook on Low heat and stir occasionally. The flavors meld better if made ahead and reheated. If using peppermint oil instead of extract, use only a drop or two as it is more concentrated.
