This recipe transforms fresh blueberries into a crispy, crunchy snack perfect for homemade trail mix. The slow, low-temperature drying process locks in flavor and creates a delightful texture without added sugar or preservatives.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (300 grams) fresh blueberries
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) lemon juice, freshly squeezed
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon (5 ml) maple syrup or honey
  • Non-stick cooking spray or parchment paper for lining trays

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven or dehydrator to 120°F (50°C).
  2. Rinse the blueberries under cold water using a fine mesh strainer. Drain well and pat dry gently with a clean kitchen towel or paper towel to remove excess moisture.
  3. Toss the berries in a mixing bowl with the lemon juice and optional sweetener if using.
  4. Arrange the blueberries in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet or dehydrator tray, spacing them out to allow air circulation.
  5. Place the tray in the oven or dehydrator. If using an oven, leave the door slightly open (about 1 inch) to let moisture escape, propping it ajar with a wooden spoon.
  6. Dry the blueberries for about 3 hours, checking every 30-45 minutes. Flip or stir the berries gently if needed to promote even drying. The berries are done when completely dry and crisp, not chewy or sticky.
  7. Cool the dried blueberries completely on the tray before storing to prevent condensation and sogginess.
  8. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks, or longer in the fridge.

Notes

Keep the oven door slightly ajar during drying to allow moisture to escape. Use parchment paper to prevent sticking and ease cleanup. Check frequently near the end to avoid burning. For chewier berries, reduce drying time by 30-45 minutes. Store in airtight containers to maintain crispiness. Re-crisp in a low oven if needed.
