Easy Mini Caprese Skewers Recipe with Homemade Balsamic Glaze

These easy mini caprese skewers combine juicy cherry tomatoes, fresh mozzarella balls, and basil leaves drizzled with a homemade tangy-sweet balsamic glaze. Perfect as a quick, crowd-pleasing appetizer or snack.

  • 20 cherry tomatoes, firm and ripe
  • 20 fresh mozzarella balls (bocconcini), well-drained
  • 20 fresh basil leaves, picked fresh
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 small garlic clove, minced (optional)
  • ½ cup balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon honey or brown sugar
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 20 toothpicks or mini skewers

Instructions

  1. Prepare the balsamic glaze: Pour ½ cup (120 ml) balsamic vinegar into a small saucepan. Add 1 tablespoon honey or brown sugar and whisk gently to combine.
  2. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, then reduce to low. Let simmer gently for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until reduced by half and thickened to a syrupy glaze. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  3. Rinse cherry tomatoes and pat dry. Drain mozzarella balls on paper towels to remove excess moisture. Pick fresh basil leaves and gently pat dry.
  4. Optional: Toss minced garlic with 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil in a small bowl for a garlic-infused oil drizzle.
  5. Assemble skewers by threading one cherry tomato, followed by a basil leaf (folded if large), then a mozzarella ball onto each toothpick or mini skewer.
  6. Lay skewers on a serving platter. Lightly drizzle garlic olive oil or plain olive oil over them. Sprinkle with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
  7. Drizzle the cooled balsamic glaze generously over the assembled skewers.
  8. Serve immediately or refrigerate uncovered for up to one hour before serving to keep basil crisp.

Notes

Reduce balsamic vinegar slowly to avoid bitterness and burning. Drain mozzarella well to prevent sogginess. Use fresh basil leaves for best flavor and appearance. If glaze thickens too much after cooling, stir in a splash of water to loosen. Skewers can be assembled a few hours ahead and glazed just before serving.
