A quick and easy Southern-style comeback sauce with a perfect balance of creamy, tangy, and mildly spicy flavors. Ideal as a dip, spread, or salad dressing.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup mayonnaise (240 ml), preferably full-fat
  • ½ cup ketchup (120 ml)
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (15 ml)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (5 ml)
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika (2 grams)
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (1 gram)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder (1.5 grams)
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder (1.5 grams)
  • A few dashes hot sauce (about ½ teaspoon or 2.5 ml), optional
  • ½ teaspoon salt (3 grams)
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper (1 gram)

Instructions

  1. Make sure all your ingredients are at room temperature for easier mixing (about 2 minutes).
  2. In a mixing bowl, add 1 cup mayonnaise and ½ cup ketchup. Whisk together until fully blended and smooth, forming a creamy pale pink sauce (2-3 minutes).
  3. Pour in 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar and 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce. Stir well to combine.
  4. Add 1 teaspoon smoked paprika, ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, and ½ teaspoon onion powder. Whisk until the color is even and spices are fully incorporated.
  5. Add a few dashes of hot sauce, then season with ½ teaspoon salt and ¼ teaspoon black pepper. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  6. Transfer the sauce to a storage container, seal tightly, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to let flavors meld. If in a rush, 30 minutes works but flavor will be sharper.
  7. Before serving, stir the sauce and taste again. Adjust with a splash of vinegar or hot sauce if desired.

Notes

[‘Use full-fat mayonnaise for best creamy texture and flavor.’, ‘Chilling the sauce for at least 1 hour softens sharp edges and blends spices.’, ‘Adjust cayenne and hot sauce gradually to control heat level.’, ‘If sauce thickens too much after refrigeration, stir in a teaspoon of water or milk to loosen.’, ‘Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 7 days.’, ‘Avoid using a food processor to mix as it can make the sauce too runny.’]
