A warm, soothing drink made with sweet roasted garlic and honey that provides natural relief for scratchy, sore throats. This simple remedy uses just three main ingredients and is surprisingly delicious.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 whole head of garlic
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons raw honey
  • 1 cup hot water
  • Optional: a squeeze of fresh lemon juice
  • Optional: a pinch of ground cinnamon or grated ginger

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Peel away the loose, papery outer layers of the garlic head, leaving the cloves attached. Slice about 1/4 inch off the top to expose the tips of the cloves.
  2. Place the garlic head in a small oven-safe dish, cut side up. Drizzle about 1 teaspoon of olive oil over the exposed cloves (optional). Cover tightly with aluminum foil.
  3. Roast for 40 to 50 minutes, until the cloves are soft, golden brown, and easily pierced with a knife. Let cool for 5 minutes.
  4. Squeeze the cloves from the bottom; they should slide out easily. Discard the skins.
  5. In a mug or small bowl, mash 2 to 3 roasted garlic cloves with a fork until smooth.
  6. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of honey to the mashed garlic and stir until combined.
  7. Pour 1 cup of hot water (not boiling) over the garlic-honey mixture and stir well. If using, add lemon juice or ginger now.
  8. Taste and adjust sweetness or strength as desired.
  9. Sip slowly while warm, allowing it to coat your throat.

Notes

Roast extra garlic heads to keep in the fridge for up to a week for quick remedy preparation. Do not use raw garlic as it can irritate the throat. Let boiled water cool for a minute before adding honey to preserve its beneficial properties.
