A customizable grilled burger bar recipe featuring juicy patties, toasted buns, and five flavorful toppings for a perfect backyard cookout or casual gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lbs ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • 4 brioche buns or classic sesame seed buns
  • 2 tbsp butter, softened (for toasting buns)
  • Smoky bacon jam (store-bought or homemade)
  • Pickled jalapeños
  • Fresh avocado slices or guacamole
  • Caramelized onions
  • Sharp cheddar cheese slices
  • Leafy lettuce leaves (optional)
  • Tomato slices (optional)
  • Ketchup, mustard, and mayo (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix gently without overworking the meat.
  2. Divide mixture into 4 equal portions (about 6 oz each) and shape into patties about ¾ inch thick. Press a slight indentation in the center of each patty.
  3. Preheat grill to medium-high heat (about 400°F). Clean and oil grates.
  4. Spread softened butter on cut sides of buns. Toast buns buttered-side down on grill for 1-2 minutes until golden and crisp. Remove and set aside.
  5. Place patties on grill and cook for 4-5 minutes on first side without pressing. Flip patties and add cheese slices immediately.
  6. Cook for another 4-5 minutes for medium doneness (internal temp 160°F). Adjust time for preferred doneness.
  7. Warm caramelized onions and bacon jam in a skillet over low heat. Slice avocado, tomato, and pickled jalapeños. Arrange toppings in bowls for easy access.
  8. Assemble burgers starting with bottom bun, then patty with melted cheese, followed by desired toppings and condiments. Top with toasted bun.
  9. Serve immediately while cheese is gooey and buns are buttery and crisp.

Notes

Do not overwork the meat to keep patties tender. Make a small indentation in the center of each patty to prevent puffing. Keep grill lid closed as much as possible to maintain heat and smoky flavor. Caramelized onions take about 20 minutes and can be prepared a day ahead. Use a meat thermometer to ensure patties reach 160°F for safety. For gluten-free options, use gluten-free buns or lettuce wraps and dairy-free cheese if needed.
