A quick, 5-minute side dish that balances tart cranberries with sweet orange and spicy fresh ginger. This chunky relish is a crowd-pleaser that pairs perfectly with holiday meats or breakfast items.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups fresh or frozen whole cranberries
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (or monk fruit/erythritol for low-sugar)
  • 1 large navel orange (zest and juice)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger root, grated
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 pinch salt

Instructions

  1. Wash the orange thoroughly. Zest the orange using a microplane, avoiding the white pith. Cut the orange in half and juice it to get about 1/2 cup of juice. Set zest and juice aside.
  2. Rinse the cranberries in a colander under cold water, removing any shriveled berries. Drain well.
  3. In a medium saucepan, combine cranberries, sugar, orange juice, water, and salt. Stir gently to coat berries and let sit for 5 minutes to draw out juices.
  4. Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Do not boil rapidly.
  5. Cook for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries burst and pop, releasing their natural pectin and thickening the mixture.
  6. Remove the pan from heat. Stir in the fresh grated ginger and orange zest. The residual heat will release the aromas.
  7. Let the relish cool to room temperature, then transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving to allow flavors to meld.

Notes

The relish thickens as it cools. If it is too thick after chilling, stir in a teaspoon of warm water. It can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks or frozen for up to three months. For a smoother texture, pulse in a food processor, but keep it chunky for the best experience. You can substitute sugar with monk fruit or erythritol, though texture may vary slightly.
