These spooky witch finger sugar cookies with almond nails are the perfect Halloween treat. They’re creepy enough to impress, but taste like a classic sugar cookie—buttery, slightly crisp on the edges, soft in the middle.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup whole blanched almonds
  • Red food coloring gel
  • Green food coloring gel (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cream the butter and sugar. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy — about 2-3 minutes with a hand mixer on medium speed.
  2. Add the wet ingredients. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract until fully combined.
  3. Mix the dry ingredients separately. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Combine wet and dry. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined.
  5. Add the food coloring. If using green food coloring, add a small dab now and mix until uniform color is achieved.
  6. Chill the dough. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  8. Shape the fingers. Take about a tablespoon of dough, roll into a log 3-4 inches long, with one end thicker and the other tapered. Place on prepared baking sheet, spacing 2 inches apart.
  9. Create the knuckles. Using a small paring knife, gently press 2-3 lines into each finger to create knuckle marks.
  10. Press in the almond nails. Press a whole blanched almond firmly into the tapered end of each finger at an angle.
  11. Add the ‘blood’ details. Using a toothpick or small brush, dab red food coloring gel around the base of the almond nail and along the knuckle lines.
  12. Bake for 10-12 minutes, until edges are just barely golden brown.
  13. Cool completely. Let cookies cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Don’t skip the chilling step—it prevents spreading. If almond nails fall off during baking, gently press them back into place while cookies are still warm. For best results, use gel food coloring, not liquid. Cookies taste even better the next day.
